As I Opened Fire

1966

Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) was an American pop artist, who is mostly known for his comic style and Ben-day dots. In fact, he did use original comics as a reference when he started enlarging and painting single images from comic strips. In the 1960s Lichtenstein wanted to create a visual language that would be understandable for all. Namely, he thought that art shouldn’t be rare, but everyday. Even though many art critics thought that this is not art, the public was welcoming to the art, which looked familiar. Roy Lichtenstein first made “As I Opened Fire” triptych as an oil and acrylic painting in 1964. The lithographs based on the painting were made later and the artist’s visual language has become well-known in its own right.

Kõigepealt maalis Roy Lichtenstein 1964. aastal “As I Opened Fire” triptühhoni kui õli- ja akrüülmaali. Maalil põhinev litograafia on loodud hiljem ning kunstniku visuaalne käekiri on saanud iseseisvalt väga tuntuks.
