Raul Meel (b. 1941) is one of Estonia’s best-known avant-garde artists and among Europe’s leading practitioners of conceptual art and concrete poetry. He has participated in more than 600 group exhibitions and over 100 solo exhibitions, and remains the only Estonian artist to have received a prize at a major international biennial. He is also widely regarded as Estonia’s most distinguished self-taught artist and outsider. Art historian Mai Levin has compared Meel’s significance for Estonian art to that of the composer Arvo Pärt for music.
In concrete poetry, meaning resides not only in words but also in the visual experience: the rhythmic structure of words and signs, the interplay of colour, repetition, and resonant silence. The letter becomes a brushstroke, words take on an architectural form, the page becomes a space, and the poem an object.
