Mr Brainwash

2023

ENG EST

Mr Brainwash (b 1966) with the real name Thierry Guetta is a French-born artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. He gained some fame in Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. Today, the artist fuses street art and Pop art. Mr Brainwash engages in appropriation in his art, playfully making the existing (art)world his own. Namely, the artist takes Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers (1889), one of the masterpieces of modernism, as a basis, and adds Andy Warhol’s iconic Flowers (1964) of postmodernism. The result is a contemporary remix where the old and the new meet. So, essentially, a century of art can be linked together: Marcel Duchamp’s mustache drawn on the Mona Lisa, Andy Warhol’s works based on photographs found in magazines, and Mr Brainwash’s contemporary collages.
Mr Brainwash (s 1966) kodanikunimega Thierry Guetta on Prantsuse päritolu kunstnik, kes elab ja töötab Los Angeleses. Omajagu kuulsust kogus ta Banksy 2010. aasta dokumentaalfilmis “Exit Through the Gift Shop.” Tänapäeval sulatab kunstnik kokku tänavakunsti ja popkunsti. Mr Brainwash tegeleb oma loomingus aproprieerimisega, tehes olemasoleva (kunsti)maailma mänguliselt enda omaks. Nimelt võtab kunstnik aluseks modernismi ühe tähtteose Vincent van Gogh “Sunflowers” (1889) ning lisab sinna postmodernismi ikoonilise Andy Warholi “Flowers” (1964). Tulemuseks on kaasaegne remix, kus vana ja uus kohtuvad. Seega olemuslikult saab kokku siduda sajandijagu kunsti: Marcel Duchampi Mona Lisale joonistatud vuntsid, Andy Warholi ajakirjadest leitud fotode alusel tehtud teosed ja Mr Brainwashi kaasaegsed kollaažid.
