Description
Alphabet Soup is a program for preschoolers to practice reading and writing in the context of a museum. At the beginning of the lesson, we will get acquainted with the famous Campbell’s Soup cans depicted by Andy Warhol. Then we will start cooking alphabet soup – playing word games. The main theme is food and good manners. So the program can be thought of as a picnic of letters. To provide variety for young visitors, we will make crafts and play movement games.
Objectives
The student:
- plays word games.
- gets acquainted with Andy Warhol’s iconic artworks – Campbell’s soup cans;
- practices reading in connection with the artworks;
- writes his/her name and simple words;
Before and after
Children can be introduced to Andy Warhol, the father of Pop art, who depicted many famous people and packaging on store shelves in the 20th century. One of his famous works – Campbell’s Soup Cans – was also his favorite food. In this regard, you can talk to children about their favorite food and, if desired, depict it in bright colors.
After the museum lesson, children can make their own version of the famous soup can. For example, draw it, give new life to tin cans as pencil cups with acrylic paints, or decorate cardboard tubes into cans using the tear-off technique.
