De Studio is an artist duo behind which are Estonian artists and photographers Herkki Erich Merila (b 1964) and Peeter Laurits (b 1962). Even though they were active in 1992-2008, they have specially created the current artwork “Maria” for the PoCo museum. It is a digital artwork and one can see printed versions of it in the museum lobby. “Maria” depicts an Estonian actress and film producer Maria Avdjuško (b 1968). In fact the current artworks are a special remake of a 1993 artwork and they are a limited edition. The creations of DeStudio in the 1990s are a great example of the fact that the explosion in the Western art world that took place in the 1960s only happened in Estonia in the 1990s. That is because Estonia was part of the Soviet Union and the country regained its independence in 1991. Therefore DeStudio creation definitely represents Estonian art and pop culture in the 1990s as it was racing to make up for the lost time.
