Hello… ; Hopeless

1987

Roy Lichtenstein (1923 - 1997) was an American pop artist, who is mostly known for his comic style and Ben-day dots. In fact, he did use original comics as a reference when he started enlarging and painting single images from comic strips. Current artwork “Hello…” is based on his 1963 painting, which was inspired by the DC Comics anthology Girls’ Romances that was published in 1950–1971. Lichtenstein actually hand painted the dots that constitute the skin of the woman and he used very few colours for this artwork: yellow, red, white and black. The artwork definitely is like a fragment from a comic as one can start wondering what happened before or what happens next and who is this woman.
