Initially 80 pictures were planned, but only 36 were finished due to the unexpected death of Warhol. He died of gallbladder operation complications at the age of 58. The topic for the “Cars” series was expanding consumer society and how automobiles had become a fetish. Everything that Warhol touched became gold, therefore joined with other giant Mercedes-Benz they both represented 20th century consumer society, which was modern, fast, beautiful and high-quality.
