Obama Hope
Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey (b 1970) is an American street artist and graphic designer. The HOPE (2008) poster depicting Barack Obama was a self-initiated election campaign during which more than 300 000 posters were produced and distributed. TIME magazine commissioned one of his Obama works from the artist for the cover image of the person of the year. Fairey was also approached for the creation of the official poster of the President-elect. Fairey also created posters with the words CHANGE and PROGRESS. Unfortunately, he got into trouble with the law with this artwork. First, photographer Mannie Garcia wanted compensation. Secondly, the court found that the artist has not adhered to the principles of the fair use doctrine, according to which the copyrighted material can be used under certain conditions without the author’s permission.
Shepard Fairey (s 1970) on Ameerika tänavakunstnik ja graafiline disainer. Barack Obamat kujutav “HOPE” (2008) plakat oli omaalgatuslik valimiskampaania, mille jooksul toodeti ja levitati üle 300 000 plakati. Ajakiri TIME tellis kunstnikult aasta inimese kaanepildiks ühe tema Obama teostest. Esiteks soovis fotograaf Mannie Garcia kompensatsiooni. Teiseks leidis kohus, et kunstnik ei ole kinni pidanud õiglase kasutamise doktriini põhimõtetest, mille alusel võib autoriõigustega kaitstut teatud tingimustel ilma autori loata kasutada.
