Flowers in a Basket

Takashi Murakami

2024

ENG EST

Takashi Murakami's (b 1962) fictional characters have become an integral part of modern mass culture. He has an extraordinary ability to combine the contradictory: pop culture and high art. The artwork is a reference to traditional Chinese and Japanese flower paintings. Murakami's 2023 solo exhibition Still Life with Flowers also rethought traditions: instead of a calm still life, there were explosive colors, repetitions, tension and mass culture aesthetics. Murakami's new flowers have undergone a transformation: joy is side by side with sadness. Under the guise of an ultra-cute kawaii aesthetic and childishness, there can also be dark undertones and characters with strange expressions or bared teeth stare back.
Takashi Murakami (s 1962) fiktsionaalsed tegelased on saanud kaasaegse massikultuuri lahutamatuks osaks. Tal on erakordne oskus ühendada vastuoluline: popkultuur ja kõrgkunst. Teos on viide Hiina ja Jaapani traditsioonilistele lillemaalidele. Murakami 2023. aasta isikunäitus “Still Life with Flowers” mõtestas samuti traditsioone ümber: rahuliku vaikelu asemel olid plahvatuslikud värvid, kordused, pinge ja massikultuuri esteetika. Murakami uued lilled on läbi teinud muundumise: rõõm on kõrvuti kõhedusega. Üliarmsa kawaii esteetika ja lapsemeelsuse varjul võivad olla ka tumedad alatoonid ja vastu vaatavad veidra ilmega või irevil hammastega tegelased.
