Forms in Space
Roy Lichtenstein
Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) was an American Pop artist, who is mostly known for his comic book style and Ben-day dots. Before depicting comics, Roy Lichtenstein was into abstract expressionism. The fact that the artist names the distorted depiction of the American flag as Forms in Space addresses how the human mind looks for symbolic meaning in abstract shapes. The piece was commissioned by the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art, and the fundraiser celebrated national emblems and morals.
