Kristian Krokfors

Biography

Kristian Krokfors was born in Finland in 1952. From 1973-74 he studied Art at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki. In 1974 he moved to England to study at Leicester Polytechnic, where he received his BA in 1977. From 1977-78 he completed the Advanced Printmaking Course at Croydon College of Art before returning to Helsinki, where he currently lives and works. In 1985 Krokfors was named Finland’s Young Artist of the Year, a prestigious national event organized by the City of Tampere and the Tampere Art Museum. From 1988-90 he spent two years living and working in New York City, returning in 2001 as
artist-in-residence under the auspices of the Finnish Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Cultural Institute for Finland in the USA.

Kristian Krokfors SHELTER 1983-2024

In the production of Kristian Krokfors, there are themes that the artist has explored throughout his entire career. One of the most typical motifs has been the tent in various
forms. At times, the tent appears massive, resembling a large circus tent, as seen in works like “Tent” (1983) and “Light Tent” (2014). Other times, it takes on a light, almost precarious
summer celebration shelter, as in the work “Blue and White Tent” (2013). Some tents are painted in muted tones, while others use bold and vivid colors.

The apparent function of the tent is to provide protection from prevailing weather conditions, but the tent also carries cultural layers of meaning. For example, a circus tent
conceals its own parallel reality, where everyday rules no longer apply. In this sense, the circus functions like a work of art, reflecting reality as if through a distorted mirror and
helping reveal the differences through which meanings are formed. Everyday life and celebration, order and chaos, as well as light and shadow, are some examples of opposing
pairs that form a central part of both the circus and Kristian Krokfors´ tent-themed works. In addition to the aforementioned, I would highlight one more opposing pair present in
Krokfors´ tent themes: protection and vulnerability. This is emphasized in a series aptly titled “Shelter” (2013).

There is an unavoidable irony when looking at these structures erected on a few thin poles. The impression of fragility is further emphasized by the enormous size of the tents, causing
a sense of dizziness when compared to the vast infinity of the background landscape. The brightly colored tents in the Shelter series do not evoke a refuge from summer rainy days during festive occasions but rather metaphysical nightmares of existential loneliness.

Kristian Krokfors´ artistic method seems to be an attempt to make the difficult-to-grasp reality more easily understandable. The artist himself has acknowledged this. By examining reality through selected subjects and dedicating his career to this observation, interesting studies on the internal laws of painting are simultaneously conducted. The interaction of colors and the play of light with various forms are central subjects in this dedicated
exploration, not to mention composition. The artist´s long-term artistic research brings his subjects to the forefront as unique but simultaneously universal.

Biograafia

Kristian Krokfors sündis 1952. aastal Soomes. 1973-74 õppis ta Helsingi Tööstuskunsti Ülikoolis kunsti. 1974. aastal kolis ta Inglismaale, et õppida Leicesteri polütehnikumis, mille ta 1977. aastal bakalaureusekraadiga lõpetas. Enne Helsingisse naasmist, kus ta praegu elab ja töötab, läbis ta 1977–1978 Croydoni Kunstikolledžis graafika edasijõudnute kursuse. 1985. aastal valiti Krokfors Soome aasta nooreks kunstnikuks, tegemist on maineka riikliku sündmusega, mida korraldavad Tampere linn ja Tampere kunstimuuseum. 1988–1990 elas ja töötas kunstnik kaks aastat New Yorgis. Krokfors naasis 2001. aastal  Soome kultuuriinstituuti New Yorgis kunstnik-residendina Soome Kujutavate Kunstide Fondi egiidi all.

Kristian Krokforsi loomingus on teemad, mida kunstnik on uurinud kogu oma karjääri jooksul. Üks tüüpilisemaid motiive on olnud telk erinevates vormides. Kohati tundub telk massiivne, meenutades suurt tsirkusetelki, nagu on näha teostel “Tent” (1983) ja “Light Tent” (2014). Muul ajal võtab see kerge, suvepeo ebakindla varjualuse rolli, nagu teosel “Blue and White Tent” (2013). Mõned telgid on värvitud summutatud toonides, teised aga kasutavad julgeid ja erksaid värve.

Telgi ilmne ülesanne on pakkuda kaitset ilmastikutingimuste eest, kuid telk kannab endas ka kultuurilisi tähenduskihte. Näiteks tsirkusetelk peidab endas oma paralleelreaalsust, kus igapäevased reeglid enam ei kehti. Selles mõttes toimib tsirkus nagu kunstiteos, peegeldades tegelikkust justkui läbi moonutatud peegli ja aidates paljastada erinevusi, mille kaudu tähendused kujunevad. Igapäevaelu ja tähistamine, kord ja kaos, aga ka valgus ja vari on mõned näited vastandlikest paaridest, mis moodustavad nii tsirkuse kui ka Kristian Krokforsi keskse telgiteemaliste tööde osa. Lisaks eelnimetatule on Krokforsi loomingus esil veel üks vastandlik paar: kaitse ja haavatavus. Seda rõhutatakse tabava pealkirjaga sarjas “Shelter” (2013).

Neid mõnele peenikesele postile püstitatud konstruktsioone vaadates on iroonia paratamatu. Hapruse muljet rõhutab veelgi telkide tohutu suurus, põhjustades peapööritust, kui võrrelda telke taustal laiuva tohutu lõpmatusega. “The Shelter” sarja erksavärvilised telgid ei kutsu pidulikel puhkudel varjupaika suviste vihmaste päevade eest, vaid pigem kutsuvad nad eksistentsiaalse üksinduse metafüüsilistesse õudusunenägudesse.

Kristian Krokforsi kunstiline meetod näib olevat katse muuta raskesti haaratav tegelikkus kergemini mõistetavaks. Ka kunstnik ise on seda kinnitanud. Uurides reaalsust läbi valitud teemade ja pühendades oma karjääri sellele vaatlusele, viiakse samaaegselt läbi ka maalikunsti siseseaduste uurimusi. Värvide vastastikune toime ja valguse mäng erinevate vormidega on selle pühendunud uurimuse kesksed teemad, rääkimata kompositsioonist. Kunstniku pikaajaline kunstiline uurimistöö toob esiplaanile tema ainulaadsed, kuid samas universaalsed teemad.
