TV-set from Sony

ENG EST

Marko Mäetamm´s (b 1965) artworks What an Apple!!! and TV-set from Sony come from Estonia, which regained its independence in 1991 and was open to the world. There are other works in the so-called What a … series, where a hippie man discovers a wrist watch, sunrise, kitsch etc. Elevating brands like Sony to the status of a saint is related to the consumer society, which was completely new and extremely awaited in Estonia. The Soviet Union Estonians got western goods thanks to acquaintances and trade under the counter and it was definitely special. Mäetamm’s technique, painting with acrylic colors on plexiglas in the negative protects the art and makes it like an art preserve. Popular culture with its accessibility and painting as so-called exclusive high art come together just like in the western Pop art, only 30 years later.
Marko Mäetamme (s 1965) teosed “What an Apple!!!” ja “TV-set from Sony” on pärit Eestist, mis 1991. aastal taasiseseisvus ja oli maailmale avatud. Nn “What a …” seerias on teisigi teoseid, kus hipimees avastab käekella, päikesetõusu, kitschi jne.
