Gerhard Richter (b 1932) is a German artist. In 1971, he returned to geometric abstractionism. While only color charts were seen in his works in the 1960s, over time the works became more diverse in their color choices. Richter also has a piece that depicts 4096 colored squares. The artist returned to so-called grid paintings only in 2007, because in the meantime he worked in other directions of abstract art. For example, he created the so-called gray paintings. Richter represented Germany at the 36th Venice Biennale in 1972 with 48 portraits. The series depicts European 19th and 20th century figures who have constructed culture and raises questions about collective identity and “father figures”.
