Surmatants

ENG EST

Edward von Lõngus is the most famous anonymous street artist in Estonia. In relation to the 100th anniversary of the Estonian Republic the artist had a tour (R)estart Reality in the European capitals. Among other cities his artworks appeared in Berlin, London, Paris, Vienna etc. In 2019 he was given the Ministry of Foreign Affairs culture award and in his written speech he focused on the Surmatants. The artwork Dance of Death is based on the medieval painting by Bernt Notke which can be seen in Niguliste museum in Tallinn and the main topic was how people are equal when it comes to death regardless of their position in this life. Lõngus is brutally honest about his artwork stressing the death dance party, where people compete to consume all the resources until there's only death. The artwork is like an enormous mirror reflecting the problems of the consumer society. However the questions remain, if and what the viewers are willing to see in the mirror and change in their daily lives.
Edward von Lõngus on Eesti tuntuim anonüümne tänavakunstnik. Seoses Eesti Vabariigi 100. sünniaastapäevaga toimus kunstnikul tuur (R)estart Reality Euroopa suurlinnades. Muuhulgas ilmusid tema teosed avalikku ruumi Berliinis, Londonis, Pariisis, Viinis jne. 2019. aastal pälvis kunstnik Välisministeeriumi kultuuripreemia, mille kirjalikus kõnes keskendus ta “Surmatantsule”. Kunstiteos tugineb keskaegsele Bernt Notke “Surmatantsule”, mida on võimalik Tallinnas Niguliste muuseumis näha. Kunstiteos on justkui hiiglaslik peegel kajastades tarbimisühiskonna probleeme. Küsimused selle kohta, kas ja mida vaatajad on valmis selles peeglis nägema ja oma argipäevas muutma aga jäävad.
