Whaam!

ENG EST

Nick Smith (b 1984) is a British artist who uses colour swatches to create his interpretations of famous artworks. His “Whaam!" is a remake of Roy Lichtenstein's classic from 1963. The artwork can be seen as a double remake as Lichtenstein based his artwork on the comic book strip from DC Comics. Smith created the artwork for his 2020 solo exhibition Pioneers, where the audience could see his remakes of famous pieces in America's art and culture using colour chips and word associations. Other artworks from the exhibition include pixelated versions of The Simpsons, half full and empty Coca-Cola bottles, Grant Wood's “American Gothic” (1930), Andy Warhol's “Flowers” (1964), Mark Rothko's “White Center” (1950) etc. One needs distance to recognise and appreciate the remakes and closer look to wander in the field of abstract colourful squares and words that accompany them. In conclusion, the artist plays masterfully with the distance, firstly it is physically changing in between the viewer and the artwork and secondly the contact that can occur with the artwork and the artist.
Mõned näited teistest näituse teostest on pikselversioonid Simpsonitest, pooltäis ja tühi Coca-Cola pudel, Grant Woodi “American Gothic” (1930), Andy Warholi “Flowers” (1964), Mark Rothko “White Center” (1950) jne.
