Francis Bacon

ENG EST

Francis Bacon (1909-1992) was an Irish born British painter. Even though his artworks are figurative, they contain something raw and distorted. He has a very unique style, possibly his characters are discomforting to watch at times, but intriguing at the same time. Bacon's oeuvre can be seen in the post-war context and his characters carry a trauma of humankind in them. In Bacon's artworks one can see periods, where he is working through the same motif and it creates as if a series, a whole. For example he painted the screaming popes in the 1950s, the crucifixions in the 1960s, self portraits in the 1970s etc. Bacon started painting only in his late twenties and attracted attention with his work in the mid 1940s. The artist was close friends with fellow artist Lucian Freud. Bacon spent his middle age drinking, eating and gambling in London's Soho district. After the overdose death of his lover George Dyer in 1971, the artist was emotionally broken and started painting the so-called black triptychs.
