Hopeless

1963

Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) was an American pop artist, who is mostly known for his comic style and Ben-day dots. In fact, he did use original comics as a reference when he started enlarging and painting single images from comic strips. Lichtenstein’s career as a pop artist took off with a 1961 painting “Look Mickey” and an exhibition the following year 1962 at Leo Castelli New York gallery. In fact, all the artworks were sold already before the opening. In 1964 Lichtenstein became the first American artist to exhibit his work at Tate Gallery in London. 1963 artwork “Hopeless” is a part of 1960s love affair series, where women are miserable next to dominant males. Other examples of the same year and theme include artworks “Drowning Girl” and “In the Car”.

1964. aastal sai Lichtensteinist esimene Ameerika kunstnik, kelle loomingut esitleti Tate’i galeriis Londonis. 1963. aasta teos “Hopeless” on üks osa 1960. aastate armuafääride seeriast, kus naised on dominantsete meeste kõrval õnnetud. Teised sama aasta ja temaatika teosed on näiteks “Drowning Girl” ja “In the Car”.
