Sleep

1964

Andy Warhol (1928-1987), the King of Pop art, was so diverse in his creation. Coming from an advertising background he widely used the silkscreen technique. He did paint as well, but a lot of his artworks are prints made by him or his assistants. Warhol was also a film director and “Sleep” is his legendary avant-garde movie, lasting 5 hours and 12 minutes and showing his lover John Giorno sleeping. Even though there was about 4 hours of filmed material, then only 30 minutes of it was used, hence film shots are being used repeatedly. It is a black and white silent movie and Warhol used a Bolex 16 mm camera and 30 m reels each lasting for 3 minutes for shooting “Sleep”. There were nine people at the premiere and two left within the first half an hour. Warhol himself didn’t necessarily see “Sleep” as a movie, but as something that would push the limits of the medium and art. Sleeping is the centre of the artwork, because Warhol saw it as something that was becoming so rare. Namely, the 1960s in New York came with drugs and many people were using amphetamine. It is debatable whether being on drugs created more of an awake time and a lot was going on or it was an extremely eventful era and one “needed” to be on drugs to be part of everything happening.
