Laulev puu

1970/2015/2022

ENG EST

Raul Meel (b 1941) is an Estonian graphic artist, painter, sculptor, installation and fire performance artist and also a poet. “Laulev puu” is an artwork, which is made on a typewriter. Raul Meel firstly showcased his “typewriter drawings” in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Graphic art, which connected words and visuals, was completely new at a time in Estonia (part of the Soviet Union at the time). “Laulev puu” is an artwork from 1970 and the new version is from 2015. On the piece a word lind (bird in Estonian) forms the crown of a tree, the word maa (land in Estonian) forms the earth. In 2022 the current version of the artwork was made and the word lind is crossed with red to mark a bird called redbreast. Actually the artist's daughter helped him to make the new version. Art scholar Mai Levin has compared the work of Raul Meel in art to the work of renowned Estonian composer Arvo Pärt in music.
Kunstiteadlane Mai Levin on Raul Meele tähendust kunstis võrrelnud tunnustatud helilooja Arvo Pärdi omaga muusikas.
