The Treachery of Images

21st century

ENG EST

Rene Magritte (1898 - 1967) was a Belgian artist, whose iconic works include “The Treachery of Images” (1929) and “Son of a Man” (1964). In the context of the 21st century many world famous artworks are presented on everyday objects. In 1929 Magritte created an oil painting that depicts a pipe, under it one can read: this is not a pipe and the painting can be seen in Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It can be confusing at first, but when one thinks about it, one can't stuff a representation of a pipe. In the case of a shopping bag, buying and using a textile bag is possible for many as a simple act of consuming. Alternatively, it can also show respect to art history. Just like pop art once used everyday objects, nowadays consumer society uses artworks.
Rene Magritte (1898 - 1967) oli Belgia päritolu sürrealismi kunstnik, kelle ikoonilised teosed on nii “The Treachery of Images” (1929) kui ka “Son of a Man” (1964). 21. sajandi kontekstis on paljud maailmakuulsad kunstiteosed esitletud igapäevaobjektidel.
