Iconic transformation game

Description

The focus of the Iconic Transformation Game is on the human being as a work of art, the shifting of boundaries, and the birth of icons, as exemplified by Andy Warhol and David Bowie. In the museum lesson, we play an orientation game in different fields of tension: art-commerce, mask-real self, permanence-change, etc. We come up with a fictional artist whom we “wrap” on an album cover.

Objectives

The student:

  • analyzes the birth of an icon (artist, artwork, event, etc.);
  • discusses the topic of self-creation and metamorphoses;
  • positions himself in different fields of tension;
  • sketches an album cover for a fictional character.
Before and after

When one comes to the museum lesson, one could have listened to David Bowie’s music and be familiar with Andy Warhol’s well-known artworks. Students can discuss, in advance for example, the concept of icons and find parallels with significant people and their activities.

As a continuation of the museum lesson, one can do creative work or self-analysis on the topic: Roles, masks and transformation.

The books Andy Warhol’s Philosophy, Bowie. Biography, David Bowie: Starman and a 5-part radio program dealing with Bowie’s career have been published in Estonian.
