Heart Spin

Damien Hirst’s Heart Spin belongs to the artist’s series of spin paintings. These artworks were created in 2009 as part of the exhibition Requiem, held at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kyiv. More specifically, the artworks emerged during a spin workshop and participatory project held at the exhibition opening, in which paint was applied to a rotating surface, allowing centrifugal force to generate unpredictable visual patterns. For the artist, randomness, movement, and the partial surrender of control are central. As a result, each work is unique, even though the method of creation is the same. The visual language of the works is linked to pop culture through the recognisable heart motif, which functions as an iconic and universal symbol, although Hirst’s practice sits more at the intersection of conceptual art and pop-cultural imagery.
