Yayoi Kusama

2006

ENG EST

Yayoi Kusama (b 1929) is known as the Princess of Polka Dots, and pumpkins are one of the most recognisable motifs in her art. For the artist, they are associated with childhood memories and symbolise something familiar and comforting. The simplified form and polka-dotted surface create a strong sense of repetition and a rhythmic visual effect. The dots symbolise infinity, the rhythmic structure of the universe, and the dissolution of the self into a cosmic whole (self-obliteration). Kusama has described the polka dot as a form that combines the qualities of the sun and the moon, containing both the energy and vitality of the sun and the calm, meditative nature of the moon.
